The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
